The Scary Truth

While online dating can be a fun and new experience for many users, it can also be a horrifying experience as well. While there are many obvious signs to be wary of when dating online, there are a few more that should be noted. According to The Bitter Sweet Life out of the 54 million single people in the US 40 million have tried online dating. That’s a ridiculously high number, and shows where are society is at this point in time.  The online dating industry alone has made an annual $4 billion dollars.

As popular as this type of dating has become the dangers that may accompany it are very real. One of the many issues is lying. Men tend to lie about things such as height, age, and income, while women usually lie about weight, age, and physical build. While there may be worse things to lie about, you might see much more than you were prepared for on a first date if this is the case.

While women are not always the victims, they do tend to be preyed upon by men for reasons such as scam, rape, and abductions/ murders. One major scam that tends to occur often is the promise of love and happiness with the other online user. They will make you feel special at first, making you believe they are in love. Then, one day, they claim they have a financial situation, and need your help. Be EXTREMELY cautious if this sign occurs. Chances are they will not pay you back, and you are out of luck in both a relationship (for the moment) and money. Often times, you are not the only one they are doing this to. They may try to continuously manipulate you, but it is up to the online user to make safe decisions.

Some scary statistics showed the following:

  • 10% of sex offenders use online dating services
  • 10% of members are scammers
  • 33% of women who have sex on the first online dating encounter, of these, 4 out of 5 women did not use protection
  • Each year Internet predators commit more than 16,000 abductions, 100 murders and thousands of rapes, according to Internet Predator Statistics.
